CIRCLE researcher Peter de Guzman talks about the youth vote in the 2022 midterms, ongoing barriers to voting, and what communities and institutions can do to increase youth participation in 2024.

Forty-two percent of Gen-Z and 30% of Millennials said they “forgot or were too busy” to participate in the 2022 midterms, according to data from CIRCLE.

Young people are the age group most supportive of abortion rights, and two in five of them nationwide said the overturning of Roe v. Wade made them more likely to vote, according to CIRCLE.

Data shows voter turnout for young Americans is increasing nationwide. According to CIRCLE, 27% of youth – ages 18-29 – cast a ballot in 2022, making it the midterm election with the second-highest youth voter turnout in almost three decades.

CIRCLE research has highlighted the value of youth poll worker programs and shown that young people who get involved in hands-on civic participation are more likely to be lifelong voters.

CIRCLE at Tufts University estimated that more than a quarter of people aged 18 to 29 — the second highest turnout from young voters in nearly three decades — cast a ballot in the 2022 midterm elections.
